Akhnoor terror attack: Militants target GREF camp near LoC, 3 civilians killed

Three civilians who were employed as labourers with General Reserve Engineer Force(GREF) were killed in a terror attack in Jammu district’s Akhnoor sector on Monday, defence sources said.

The GREF is the parent cadre force of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) that builds and maintains border roads in the country.

According to reports, terrorists first lobbed hand grenades at the camp followed by firing mercilessly at around 3 am. Three people were reportedly killed in the deadly attack.

Sources said two to three terrorists, are believed to have sneaked into the Indian territory from across the LoC and they launched an assault on the camp in in Battal village around 1am in Jourian area, 55km from Jammu, near the border with Pakistan.

Troops along with the police have cordoned off the area and a counter operation has started, they said. A senior police officer said all routes to the area have been plugged and the operation is in full swing.

In the last week of November, seven soldiers, including two Majors, were killed when militants dressed as policemen stormed a military camp in Jammu’s Nagrota.

The brutal attack was the second in as many months since the siege of another army base at northern Kashmir’s Uri left 19 Indian soldiers dead, spiking tensions between India and Pakistan.
