An independent lawmaker from Meghalaya, Julius K Dorphang, who is accused of raping a minor girl twice, was arrested on Friday in Guwahati on Saturday morning.
Julius Kitbok Dorphang, an independent legislator representing Mawhati constituency, was later taken to Shillong and is now at the Sadar Police Station.
“We assisted a team of Meghalaya police in arresting the MLA from ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminus) area on the outskirts of the city,” Guwahati commissioner of police Hiren Nath said.
Mr Dorhphang, a former rebel leader of the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council, went into hiding after police registered a rape case against him.
The heinous incident, came to light after an employee of a guest house owned by senior Congress leader and state Home Minister H D R Lyngdoh’s son was arrested for pimping the victim last month.
The victim was rescued from near the guest house and brought to the police station where she named all those involved in the racket. Five of the eight people, including four women named in separate FIRs, have been arrested till date.
On January 4th, a local court issued a non-bailable warrant against Mr Dorphang after he failed to appear before the police and since then a man hunt began.
