President Barack Obama expressed his views in an interview released on Monday, saying that he could have beaten Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump “if i had run again”.
Obama, who will hand over the White House to Trump on January 20, speaking to CNN said, “I am confident in this vision because I’m confident that if I had run again and articulated it, I think I could’ve mobilized a majority of the American people to rally behind it.”
In his most pointed critique yet, Obama said Hillary Clinton’s campaign acted too cautiously out of a mistaken belief that victory was all but certain.
“If you think you’re winning, then you have a tendency, just like in sports, maybe to play it safer,” Obama said in the interview with former adviser and longtime friend David Axelrod.
Mr. Obama also reiterated that many people around the country, including opponents, kept telling him that the vision and direction of his message is the correct one, Efe reports.
He went on to add that the Republicans were only able to engage in an exercise in disunity, insisting that Mr. Trump’s victory does not show that the dreams of “one America that is tolerant and diverse and open” have failed.
